Britain’s North South Cup competition raises cash for Nepal and the Southenera surrender their trophy

An impressive US$4774, was raised by the pilots during the 17-19th May weekend, made up from the donation of competition fees and pilot’s prize money. The amount was then generously doubled and added to by way of a private donation, bringing the total to he relief team currently helping quake victims in Nepal.

The weekend’s event saw one valid task flown from the Long Mynd in Wales in which only a handful of pilots managed to get away on Friday. The meteo wind picked up and high cirrus later in the afternoon, chasing away further hopes of thermal activity. However top pilots of the day chosing to launch early were Phil Colbert, who flew the furthest distance, scoring for the Northern Team with a flight over 120km, with Hugh Miller (South) and Steve Senior (North) scoring maximum points for the day, also with flights over 100km. The remainder of which roughly 30% mnaged to get away from the hill and fly some shorter distances, whlist the others enjoyed continued attemps until eventually the unanimous vote was to head for the local pub!

The scoring system was simple with each pilot placing a pin on the map where he had landed.  Southern Team soon realised there was no just cause in protesting as it was clear the North had won by a margin.  All in good sporting conduct, the cup was handed over and presented by Jim Mallinson, Captain of the Southern Squadron and to Jocky Sanderson, Chief of the Northern.  No doubt, the Southern are already plotting as to how to win it back in 2016.
